Though my research is primarily about Vietnamese Americans and the Vietnamese diaspora writ large, it's always been important to contextualize the arrival of Vietnamese people in the United States within the context of "Asian American" as an identity category that develops gradually and unevenly as the U.S. grapples with its understandings of the people originating from Asia who eventually treat it as their home.
