Welcome! I am Jason Nguyen, a graduate student in ethnomusicology at Indiana University, Bloomington, and this blog is where I make observations about music, culture, and academic life.

Looking for a purpose

I’ve never been able to hold on to a blog for too long, mostly because I think most of my blogs end up being too diffuse, and in trying to cover so much (from school to personal life to news and beyond), I end up covering nothing in any meaningful way. This blog, at least in premise, has a pretty basic purpose: it is a space where I can discuss ideas pertaining to my academic work while not having to worry about the specifics of absolutely rigorous standards.  It is a space where I allow myself to think intellectually, but not always seriously or thoroughly. It is a sandbox, rooted in scholarly concerns but based upon the sensibilities of the courtyard rather than the classroom.

I hope that with this statement of purpose I can get myself to stay the course this time. Wish me luck!

Very cool. Good luck. I love to see how blogs evolve. I’ll be excited to see how we can stay engaged over the summer via blogs.

  • Thanks, Thomas! I’m still waiting to see your next updates, and I’m particularly interested to see why you think the Jagermeisters are okay as a novelty band 😛

But I’ll wait until the semester is over to levy a complaint.
